iPad Pro gets one step closer to gaming laptops with this update

Gaming on the iPad Pro has been ... well, a mixed bag. Sure, Apple's high-end tablet has a big, bright screen and a super-fast A12Z processor, but input methods have still mostly focused on touch, so it's not exactly replaced anybody's laptop. However, new features coming in iPadOS 14 look to make the iPad more of a gamer-friendly device. One of iPadOS 14's hidden features that Apple didn't brag about on stage at WWDC 2020 is that mouse and keyboard support are finally coming to the iPad. It's both an overdue addition that could make Apple Arcade games a bit more capable and help Apple's overall renewed push for more gaming on its devices. Apple revealed the keyboard and mouse support in a video made for developers, showing how to add those new features to their apps. At WWDC, Apple also revealed that it's adding support for the Xbox Elite Wireless Series 2 controller and the Xbox Adaptive Controller.  As The Verge notes, current keyboard and mouse sup

Laptops for all: Spokane district initiative would aim to make distance learning equitable

Spokane Public Schools is making a case for a comprehensive plan that would give every child in the district an equitable chance at distance learning. At Wednesday night's board meeting, directors gave informal approval to a proposal that would allocate $3.8 million toward the purchase of hardware and software. If adopted, the initiative would allow each student to have a district-issued laptop at home. The investment would "give the district the opportunity to be ready for COVID and 21st century learning," associate superintendent Adam Swinyard told the board. Most of the funding will come from federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security, or CARES, Act dollars, with some future outlays paid for by district levies. When COVID-19 struck three months ago, Spokane was better prepared than most districts, thanks to earlier investments in laptops. Those laptops were checked out – one per family, which wasn't e

SAN ANTONIO – Fewer high school graduates will receive scholarships or laptops from the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy and Educational Foundation due to the COVID-19 pandemic hampering fundraising efforts, according to Ernest Martinez, organization chairman. Ernest Martinez is the son of the late Jaime Martinez, who created the foundation to honor Chavez, the labor organizer who was his mentor. Until the pandemic hit, the foundation was on track to see a record turnout for the annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice through San Antonio's West Side. Ernest Martinez said the organization was on pace to raise $35,000 to reward deserving high school graduates. "I believe 30 applications came in, but we were able to honor 10," Martinez said. He said only $17,000 was raised thanks to private and corporate donors such as HEB, CPS Energy, and NRP, a housing development firm. Martinez said because of the COVID-19 pandemic, both the parade and its biggest fundraiser, the Grand Marshal Breakf

Acer's Swift 5 Will Be One of the First Laptops With Intel's Fancy New Integrated XE Graphics

Gambar
Last week, Intel's chief performance strategist posted a clip of a laptop with Intel's new integrated XE graphics running Battlefield 5 surprisingly smoothly, and today, Acer followed that up by announcing one of the first laptops to feature Intel's new integrated graphics in an actual device. At just 0.59-inches thick and weighing just 2.2 pounds, Acer's 14-inch Swift 5 looks to be quite portable for a system that offers a choice between Intel's integrated XE graphics or Nvidia's Mx350 discrete graphics. And with a starting price of just $1,000, the Swift 5 shouldn't present a huge strain on your wallet either. But the big deal is that if Intel's integrated XE graphics can deliver on the teases that Intel has been pushing out, that could mean something as thin and light as the Swift 5 could let you play older AAA games reasonably well without the need for a more expensive and power-hungry discrete GPU.
