Right now everyone's focused on working from home, but let's not forget playing at home. Maybe you've got a library of Steam games you haven't touched in a while, or perhaps you want to enjoy the latest Epic freebies (which are going away tomorrow, March 26, FYI) to their fullest. Heck, maybe you're ready to jump into PC gaming for the first time, see if it really is better than console gaming. (My $.02: It absolutely is. Half-Life: Alyx, anyone?) Whatever the case, this might be the time to grab a gaming laptop, a system that has ample horsepower to run new and old titles alike (including VR stuff) in all their high-resolution, full-effect glory. Newegg has two notable deals running right now, both on MSI machines. They're the same p

Should you wait for AMD Ryzen 4000 or Intel Comet Lake H laptops or get an older model for cheap?

Gambar
Should you buy a new laptop right now? That's a particularly tricky question this spring—not because of the coronavirus, but because both AMD and Intel are coming out with new mobile CPUs within the next few months. AMD's Ryzen 4000 CPUs promise to do for laptops what its first Ryzen CPUs did for desktops: finally give Intel processors a real fight. Meanwhile, Intel's 10th-gen Comet Lake H laptop CPU is expected to arrive before AMD's Ryzen 4000, perhaps to get a leg up on a tough competitor.  For some power users, it will be worth it to wait for the new chips. For most mainstream users, this could be a great time to snag a deal on a laptop with an older CPU that will work just fine. Where do you fall? We'll walk you though the key use cases to help you decide. Wait: If you use your laptop for gaming Gamers with money burning a hole in their pockets would likely gain the most from waiting to see what we get from AMD and Intel.

Distance learning sees increased demand for laptops

Gambar
Abu Dhabi: Electronic stores in Abu Dhabi say purchases have gone up during past two weeks with parents buying laptops for the electronic items as their children get ready to start distance learning from home. "There has been a notable increase in the last two weeks, with a lot of sales coming in for laptops and tablets. Many parents started visiting the store and buying the devices after the schools were shut," said a customer care representative at Mushrif Mall's Sharaf DG. "In terms of stock, it depends on what they're looking for, in general we are well stocked, and if we don't have something in the store we can get it in 24 hours for them," the representative added, explaining that Lenovo devices were the only ones that had currently sold out. Jumbo Electronics at the Galleriah Al Maryah Island said they too have seen sales going up as parents visited t

Colorado spends $2.4 million on emergency laptops for state employees who can work at home

Gambar
In a scramble to build up work-from-home infrastructure, Colorado's state government is spending about $2.4 million to purchase emergency laptops for remote employees, according to the governor's Office of Information Technology. There are some 30,000 people who work for the state, and while some of their jobs can't be done remotely — corrections officers, Colorado State Patrol troopers and some transportation staff, for example — it appears that many corners of state government are moving in that direction. A spokeswoman for the Office of Information Technology said that 14 different state departments and offices requested new laptops, and that the state purchased nearly 1,800 of them, at a cost of $1,325 per unit. The laptops are made by the Chinese tech company Lenovo. The spokeswoman told The Denver Post that the IT office created a task force earlier this month to prepare for the COVID-19 crisis, and "to ensure state network and system continuity during th

Zoldan, 39, added that his goal was to make the programming streamable every day. "When I found out that this could affect my business and we can possibly close for several months, I right away think, 'Opportunity!'" Khan, who took part in the Stand Up NY event, said that the difference in performing without a physical audience went beyond whether a joke landed. "There's no qualitative judgment you can make on that set whatsoever," Khan said. For example, he said, a no-name comedian could be followed by Dave Chappelle, but who could tell whether one was better than the other if there was no audience reaction? Livestreaming also provided outlets for comedians who could no longer travel to shows. Kelly Bachman, 28, and Dylan Adler, make up the cast of "Rape Victims Are Horny Too," an hourlong musical that debuted last month at Caveat, a comedy theater in downtown Manhattan. Another major fencing bust in the Bay Area yields thousands of stolen laptops, phones

Gambar
FREMONT — Bay Area authorities announced Thursday afternoon the takedown of multiple illegal fencing operations, resulting in the recovery of about 2,200 electronic devices worth more than $1.5 million, many of which police say were likely stolen from people's cars over the past several months. Officials from the Fremont Police Department and Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office also said police took nearly $250,000 in cash along with several high-end cars as evidence in some of the cases against 11 suspects authorities have charged in connection with rings that sell stolen electronics to overseas buyers. The cars, including a 2019 Mercedes G43 AMG, and a 2013 Porsche Panamera, were believed to be purchased with profits from stolen cellphones, laptops, and other electronics taken in the kind of smash-and-grab auto burglaries that have been a plague on Bay Area residents and visitors for several years, police said. "Make no mistake about it, what you're l

European Union announces plans for ‘right to repair’ rule for phones, tabs, laptops by 2021

Gambar
The European Commission (EU) has announced plans for a new 'right to repair' rule that should cover phones, laptops and tablets by 2021. If brought into force, it will mean that these devices should remain useful for longer before they need to be recycled or become e-waste in landfills. This plan is being considered as a part of a bigger set of product initiatives that also covers textiles, packaging, plastics and food. The ultimate aim is to help EU become climate neutral by 2050. The 'right to repair' rules is EU's way of wanting more products which are sustainably designed. Under the new plan, products should be more upgradable, durable, reusable and made from recycled materials. EU hopes to reward manufacturers who achieve these goals and are also considering introducing schemes that will let consumers sell/return old phone, tablets, chargers and laptops more easily. EU introduced these 'right to repair' rules for household appliances li

MacBook Pro 2020: Everything you need to know about Apple’s next laptops

Gambar
With the MacBook Pro 16-inch receiving rave reviews, Apple-made ARM processors on the horizon, and even a dual-screen MacBook apparently in the works, these are interesting times for fans of Apple's laptops. That's doubly so with the MacBook Pro, where a lot of Apple's high-end development takes place. And with the new decade upon us, there's plenty to look forward to this year — so what exactly should you expect from the MacBook Pro in 2020? Price and release date At this stage, exact release dates are a matter of speculation, but some clues have started to become clear as to when the next MacBook Pro could launch. In recent weeks, we've been hearing a lot of chatter about an Apple event being scheduled for March 31, where the company will supposedly launch a new MacBook Pro 13. That's earlier in the year than Apple normally launches new MacBook Pro models, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. This backs up an earlier clue that came in the form of a l

USB 4 is the next leap forward for laptops and phones

Gambar
USB connectors are an important but overlooked component of laptops, smartphones and many other devices. Tech products have been using the most recent version of the connection standard, USB 3.2, since 2017 at the earliest, so it's high time for an upgrade in the form of USB 4. Semiconductor manufacturer Cypress has announced a pair of new USB controllers - chips which help a device's main processor interface with whatever's been plugged in via the port. These controllers work with USB 3.2, DisplayPort and Power Delivery as you'd expect, but also with the slowly emerging USB 4 standard. As Anandtech (via TechRadar Pro) reports, the controllers' firmware can be updated to support USB 4 but are not by default compatible. What this may mean is while the ports using these controllers will be able to use USB 4, they won't be capable of using the maximum available data transfer rate. USB 4 was announced in August 2019, and while it still uses the USB-C reversible sh

Are your gadgets spying on you? Experts' advice on laptops, phones and smart speakers

Gambar
From smartphones to central heating, technology now plays a crucial role in most people's daily lives. But after owners of online baby monitors were hacked by cybercriminals , there are fears the high-tech devices we rely on so much can actually be used to spy on us. Here, we ask experts if we are the targets of sinister snooping, how to stay safe and reduce the risks online. Smart speakers You may rely on an Alexa or a smart speaker to play music, time the oven or turn lights off and on. But this convenience comes at a price. Experts agree they can be a huge problem when it comes to privacy. Dr Garfield Benjamin, a post-doctoral researcher at Solent University, said: "Smart assistants are privacy nightmares. They can tell when you say 'Hey Alexa' by constantly listening in." Jake Moore, a cyber security specialist at internet security company ESET, agrees. He says: "If you're going to buy a smart speaker, you're effectively putting a surveilla

The best Chromebook 2020: Our pick of the top Chrome OS laptops

Gambar
Looking for a new Chromebook? Chromebooks have been getting more and more successful, and are available from many big names in laptops including HP, Acer and Asus. Education has also been a big market for the devices, but they're also great for a simple home laptop for Gmail, Google Docs and web browsing.  Chrome OS is Google's alternative to Windows and, essentially, is a more complex version of the Chrome browser with a desktop. It's ridiculously simple to use, updates itself and lacks the confusion and complexity that often hobbles Windows and macOS. That said, it is less capable for professional use than the other operating systems. But for most users at home or in education it provides more than enough functionality. Here's our list of of the best Chrome OS laptops and we'll be adding more in as time goes on.  Our pick

You can’t just throw away your old laptops and hard drives in South Africa

Gambar
Getting rid of broken or obsolete computer components is not as simple as throwing them in the trash. In South Africa, the disposal of old electronic equipment like hard drives and batteries is governed by various regulations. The National Environmental Waste Act of 2008 requires the appropriate disposal of hazardous waste such as batteries that contain chemicals which pose a danger to the environment. Additionally, the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) necessitates the need for enterprises to completely delete any personal data from storage drives to protect employees and clients. Both businesses and individuals therefore have an obligation to get rid of their old electronic equipment in a responsible manner to ensure the necessary compliance. To find out more about the lawful destruction and recycling of e-waste, MyBroadband spoke to Desco Electronic Recyclers, E-waste SA, and Computer Scrap Recycling.
